Summary/Abstract: The existence of an armed conflict is an important fact in the international legal system. The derivation of some minimum defining characteristics inherent in any armed conflict, which distinguish it from situations of unarmed conflict or peacetime situations, has significant consequences for the operation of international law related to the application of the norms of international humanitarian law.
