Summary/Abstract: Calendar rites and customs are an important historical source and indicator of ethnocultural processes. A comparative study of the models of traditional behavior of diff erent European peoples allows us to identify in them both common elements and various national, regional and local features. The focus of the author is the ancient pagan complex of the holiday of seeing off winter and meeting spring, known in the Western Christian tradition as Carnival, and in the Eastern (Orthodox) as Maslenitsa. The research methodology is based on an interdisciplinary approach and the use of the cross- cultural analysis method, which consists in comparing a number of homogeneous facts that diff er signifi cantly in their genesis and semantic load. It turned out that the Maslenitsa order of the Slavs belongs to the circle of European carnival traditions. The scientifi c novelty of intelligence lies not only in the comparative generalization of a certain array of facts, but also in the use of axiological (evaluation) analysis in order to determine relic – relic and viable forms of folk culture. The conclusions emphasize that in the conditions of modern Ukraine it is expedient to popularize European models of carnival communication and freedom in the context of the formation of a democratic society.
