Summary/Abstract: The paper has analyzed folk geographical terms of the microfield «stagnant waters» in the composition of the microhydronyms of the territory of the Upper – Middle Reaches of the Dniester which embraces the Ternopil’ region according to the administrative and territorial structure which is abundant in reservoirs of a closed type (ponds, pools, lakes, storage ponds, ravines, fi lled with stagnant water ets.). Research methods. The article deals with onomastic, semasiological, derivative and etymological analyses of 2133 microhydronyms of Ternopil Oblast taking in toponymic context and further disclosure of nomination nature of stagnant water objects of the area. The article is devoted to of derivation and etymology of limnonyms, helionyms and microhydronyms of Ternopil Oblast by means of lexicosemantic, formal and grammatical criteria enabled us to establish the semantics of formants and etymons of toponymic stems. Scientifi c novelty. We traced strong ties between the genesis of microhydronym and the class of natural object of nomination: a) mostly names of marshes, morasses, water fi lled ravines, gullies, fi lled with stagnant water with diff erent (mostly landscape) semantics derive from popular geographical terminology; b) names of ponds and wells that are derived from oikonyms; c) derivatives from anthroponyms are present in the names of small ponds, wells and they indicate to the ownership of the hydroobject. The dissertation study of microhydronymy of Ternopil Oblast (names of stagnant waters) provides new information on theoretical and practical approaches to analyses of hydronymic regional systems and reveals their characteristic features on the national toponymic (microhydronymic) level. Conclusions. In the process of the study of microhydronymic cadastre microhydronyms among which we traced quantitative correlation between derivatives of the ones derived from appellatives (56 %) the ones derived from onyms (44 %) were analysed. There is a tendency in the oblast to prevalence of the hydronyms derived from appellatives over those derived from onyms. In the process of research the character of microhydronyms in reference to their locative (location of the object, physical and geographical peculiarities) or possessive types (belonging of the hydronym to a person); prerequisites for appearance and traced stages of formation of microhydronyms. The relaitonship between derivational structure of microhydronyms and adjacent oikonyms from the point of view of primacy/secondariness of their origin, the names of microhydroobjects were grouped from the point of view of their archaic character and productiveness and areas of their use was established. Genetic information about microhyronyms was also obtained.
