Summary/Abstract: The dominant discourse about cultural heritage in Romania states that the material remains from the past are a mandatory inheritance that only a minority can properly understand. Shared by politicians and researchers who live in a state presented by them as democratic, it promotes and justifies a distinction between those who know, and therefore should rule and educate, and those who can have access to knowledge only if they believe that what they are told is true and act accordingly.
