Establishment of the Department for Religious Affairs in Elbląg in 1975

Summary/Abstract: In 1975, a new administrative division of Poland was introduced. TheElbląg Voivodeship created at that time was covered by three dioceses:Chełmno, Gdańsk and Warmia. The most important decisions concerning theorganisation of the newly created voivodeship were made in Gdańsk. An em-ployee of the Gdańsk religious administration became the director of the Reli-gious Affairs Department in Elbląg. He did not see any need for church build-ing in the area under his authority. His thesis that there was no problem in thisarea was to be confirmed by the lack of involvement of the faithful in obtainingpermits for investments. In the early months of 1976, however, the authoritiessucceeded in setting up a provincial branch of the Catholic Caritas Associationand allocating premises for an office. The organisation was trusted to furtherloyalise the clergy.
