Summary/Abstract: The study reveals the activities of the Russian military intelligence on the Balkans in the two decades following the Crimean war. Given the circumstances after the Paris реасе treaty Russia wasn't in а position for active interventions in South Eastern Europe, but the clear enough perspective for а future war against the Ottoman Empire, for restoring influence and prestige in the strategically important region, made necessary for St. Petersburg to plan а hypothetical campaign in South-Eastern Europe. Major part of the preparation for such developments was military intelligence, which is reflecting features of Russia's military thinking, strategic plans and general policy regarding the Balkans in the complex period between the Crimean war and the Eastern crisis of 1875 - 1878.
