The Studio Distribution Alternative

Summary/Abstract: The history of specialized film exhibition in Bulgaria begins with the creation of the “Studiino Razprostranenie” [Art House Distribution] department at the State Enterprise (SP) “Razprostranenie na filmi” [Film Distribution]. This event in the history of cinema in Bulgaria marked the beginning of the distribution of arthouse films as a kind of alternative to the mass repertoire during the time of socialism in Bulgaria. Through it, viewers could see examples of world cinema outside of the films of the Eastern Bloc. The proposed text focuses on the history of this differentiated exhibition model and the reasons for its decline in the late 1980s.
