Summary/Abstract: Modern mass culture often uses religious figures as a medium to express socialand political beliefs, leading to their transformation. In this article I examine how the Iron Vaginasin the song Wziemiowstąpienie reinterpret the figure of the Virgin Mary. By interpreting the lyricsof the song and the music video for the song, it is possible to find out which traditional boundarieshave been crossed, where the central point of consideration becomes the “ascension” of the VirginMary. I show that the artists chose to transform this figure into a symbol of resistance againstpatriarchal social and religious structures. The main purpose of the text, which is divided intofour parts (an introduction, two analytical and a conclusion), is to interpret the above-mentionedpiece. This turns out to be possible through the use of various research perspectives, these inclu-de sociological, theological, literary or linguistic sources. Fundamental to the article’s optics isfeminist criticism, from which Iron Vaginas makes the strongest use. Through an analysis of thecultural context, social reactions and theological implications, I aim to understand how femaleartists reclaim the figure of the Virgin Mary, with which they join the discussion on the roleof women in society, with particular attention to the effects of the appropriation of common spaceby the dominant religion in Poland.
