Summary/Abstract: The article traces the spelling of numerical nouns in 182 documents (receipts) written by two Varna scribes from the local Bulgarian municipality – Konstantin Mihailov Tyulev and Hristo T. Gruev. The study presents data on some of the more important moments of the orthographic development of the New Bulgarian literary language in the third quarter of the 19th century evidenced in the numerical nouns: the use of synonymous letters (и/ы), the successors of ѧ, the etymological and non-etymological use of ѣ, the competition between the literary tradition (local or Church Slavonic) and the living speech.
