Summary/Abstract: The duration of the Police Commissariat in Chust exceeded by only a few daysa period of 10 years, during which time the office faced too frequent changes of its administrators, few of whom were properly knowledgeable and energetic, while manyof them were totally inexperienced or lacked proper management, so that the officewas still in a state of infancy, when some basic service aids had to be re-established.Other parts of the office also suffered from the inconsistency of the leadership and itslack of expertise, although the Uniformed Security Guard Corps had developed verywell after the initial cluelessness of its commander. This latently unsatisfactory stateof affairs is all the more surprising given that the Bureau operated in a highly troubledarea where many violent clashes occurred in the second half of the 1920s andthe early part of the next decade. One possible explanation for this is that shortlyafter its establishment in 1922, in the mid-twenties, there were considerations ofabolishing it, which probably led the higher authorities to be reluctant to invest time, staff and funds in what was essentially a provisional office. Despite these circumstances, the staff was able to operate in a hostile environment, perform a multitudeof tasks, and handle many heated and life-threatening situations.
