Summary/Abstract: The present paper is an attempt at defining the possible application of Michael White’s externalization in the context of a psychodynamic understanding of the relational dynamics in high-conflict couples. In the beginning, the notion of necessity and potential therapeutic benefits of combining family-system and psychodynamic principles and approaches in the work with these couples is discussed. From that perspective, the possibility is examined that certain explanatory models of high-conflict couples’ relational dynamics, informed by some themes and ideas of a key British object-relations theory, could serve as a meta-discoursive basis upon which specific negative dominant relational narratives and problem-saturated descriptions emerge. The main assumption is that such an application of the externalization method could elucidate and increase the hidden positive resources of such couples, and thus to stimulate more positive and satisfactory ways of relating.
