THE ROLE OF EMOTIONS AND SOCIAL NETWORKS ACTIVITY IN THE FRIENDSHIP CLOSENESS’ DYNAMICS

Summary/Abstract: The social network of Facebook is not just the first, but also the largest digital social platform in the world, which started the evolution of this type of platforms. The interactions between people in it can lead to a lasting change in their relationships. The present study aims to determine whether digital communication changes the closeness between friends who know each other in person by examining the role of emotions in this change. The study included 52 individuals (males = 18; females = 34) who completed a quantity diary over 7 days. The instrument measures quantitative characteristics of social network communication such as number of new posts, perceived importance in the network, emotions experienced when interacting with a friend’s post, and proximity dynamics over the study period. The results show that, despite the predominant emotion “happiness”, there is a decrease in closeness between friends, as a result of the negative emotions reported by the questionnaire.
