Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the fates of officers-former POWs, who –following the end of World War II – joined the Polish II Corps in Italy. The majorityof them had been detained in German POW camps run by the Wehrmacht foralmost six years. They found resuming their military service very difficult. Theyhad to get acquainted with the new war doctrine, methods of combat, arms, equip-ment and the like during a very short time. Many of them were appointed to holdcommanding officer’s posts and came to oversee far more experienced soldiers, which frequently evoked negative effects, moods or emotions. The military serviceof the officers-former POWs – in the II Corps lasted fairly short: on the power ofpolitical decisions, in 1946, the majority of the personnel were transferred to GreatBritain, where – from then on without the uniform on – they had to start theirnew post-war lives.
