Summary/Abstract: The article is an introduction to a series of papers devoted to the realismsof the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, for which the point of reference, beyondthe realist tradition itself, is postmodern literature and the era of late capitalism. Inthe text, the author looks at the notion of realism in twentieth-century literarytheory, its re-evaluations caused by changes in the field of literature as well as scienceand technology – especially in the modernism. The author focuses primarily on thetheories developed in the 20th century, which in a way extend the concept of realism, analysing the “realist impulse” from ethical-epistemological, but also formal per-spectives. The presentation of the process of loosening the traditional frameworkof realism is crucial, as it is this process that allowed for the emergence of variousappendageally-defined realisms of the late 20th century (e.g. hysterical realism, degenerative realism, mythorealism, Russian new realism), often constituting notso much a literary trend as a critical-literary label.
