Summary/Abstract: This paper examines “Babel: An Arcane History”, a novel published in 2022 by the Chinese-American author Rebecca Kuang. The introduction describes the qualities of the book, its specifics, related to is to the hybrid genre of historical fantasy and its appropriation to the dark academia aesthetics that is popular in the social media, as well as what it means, according to the young generation of readers. The following two parts examine the novel’s reception both globally and in Bulgaria, while focusing on the amazing work of the translator Bogdan Rusev, who won a prestigious award for his translation of “Babel” not long after the book’s publication in Bulgarian. Alongside the commentary on the reception, some difficulties and peculiarities of the translation that deserve attention are being examined, given that good translation and preservation of the meaning embedded in the original text are essential to the good reception of the book among the Bulgarian readers, and this part of the analysis is made with the help of some sources from respected names in translation theory – Daria Karapetkova and Marie Vrinat-Nikolov.
