Summary/Abstract: Denmark is the sole member state of the European Union with a dominant Church. It is the only Nordic state that has not renounced this form of relationship with the Church, which does not necessarily align anymore with the needs and preferences of an increasingly secularized population. The causes of Danish exceptionalism can be attributed to the complexity of amending the Danish Constitution and the country’s historical context. The Danish Kingdom was established as a Christian state, a fact that is currently being utilized discursively by populists who equate Lutheranism with Danish national identity. However, this model of the relationship between the state and the Church is currently facing significant challenges due to the growth of religious diversity, particularly the relatively rapid increase in the number of Muslim immigrants.
