Summary/Abstract: Real-world globalization and its counterpart in the social sciences have developed in tandem for a period, but since 2014, they seem to have diverged. The intensifying deglobalization in political and economic spheres is counterbalanced by an increased globalization of perspectives and issues within the social sciences. This contrast is evident in the growing importance of the "global angle," which has expanded thematic and methodological niches. The discourse of global interconnectedness has been a refuge for progressive, cosmopolitan ideals, which, throughout history, have been repeatedly undermined. The current global polycrisis echoes debates from fifty years ago, particularly in Eastern Europe, where a "worldist" discourse challenged the apparent fragmentation of the world into rival political and economic blocs. This dossier revisits historical and contemporary perspectives on the global South, especially in relation to socialist regimes. It includes a discussion of past theoretical debates about the nature of socialist regimes, alongside current critiques of decolonial paradigms in research on Eastern European socialism. The dossier also features materials from the socialist press, reflecting Romania's views on the global South, and concludes with local, contemporary perspectives on these issues.
