The Role of Memory Institutions (Libraries, Community Centers, Archives And Museums) in Building Cultural Identity in the 21st Century

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this text is to present the role of cultural institutes such as libraries, community centres, archives, and museums in the process of generating, preserving, and popularising identities. The object of the research focuses on the process of identity formation in the XXI century, with the main emphasis being placed on cultural ones. By means of a parallel between the approaches of instrumentalism applicable in the formation of ethnic identity and the techniques used by the four types of memory institutions in the construction of its cultural variety, the key role of the latter in this process is highlighted, which is also the main subject of the study. In addition to the pedagogical functions of the four types of institutions necessary for the formation of identities, their membership in international organisations and the cooperation carried out within these through various initiatives are also examined. An interdisciplinary approach was used to write this article.
