Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with the oral description provided by adult males with a severeintellectual disability. In logopaedic diagnostics, the object of analysis often assumes theform of oral texts. Description is a form of utterance that is more difficult than narrativebecause it requires considerable intellectual involvement on the part of the sender.By referring to the normative features of description we can easily indicate descriptionsthat do not follow the procedures that are said to demonstrate the acquired narrativecompetence. The study results show that adult males with a severe intellectual disabilityhave not learned the structure of this kind of utterance and the “interactive techniqueof its realization” (Grabias 2021: 18). In the case of oligophasia, which is a speech disorder,it is usually an immense problem to acquire this structure, a problem that is connected with cognitive and linguistic difficulties. Despite numerous limitations, the participantsof the study were able to co-construct discourse, although the produced narrativeutterances did not meet the requirements of description.
