Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to the relationship between aphasia and Asperger’s syndrome (AS),both of which, according to traditional taxonomies, represent separate neurodevelopmentaldisorders that affect children’s language and communication skills. The article is supposedto assess the possibility of co-occurrence of specific language impairment (SLI) andAS in the same individual, thus confirming the validity of the dimensional approach. The authors review literature on the subject, discuss inclusion and exclusion criteria for the diagnosis of SLI and AS, as well as a disorder in-between them called semanticpragmatic disorder. This is done with reference to the ICD and DSM classifications aswell as the most recent findings published in the literature. They present two researchperspectives on the possible overlap of the discussed disorders, pointing to data fromstudies comparing language skills and genetic aspects of such an overlap.
