Summary/Abstract: The article examines the role of the riddle (folklore and literary) as a means of: developing cognitive interest in preschool children; acquiring new knowledge; developing speech; developing the ability to analyze and generalize; forming in children the skills to independently draw conclusions and inferences. The possibilities that the riddle provides to the teacher in various pedagogical situations are also indicated. A brief overview of the importance of the riddle in Bulgarian folk pedagogy and as an element of the cultural learning process is also provided.
