Moralizing Themes Carved on the Portal of the Evangelical Church

Summary/Abstract: The western portal of the Evangelical Church of Avrig, built up in the Romanesque Style, has complex carved decoration, unfortunately in a state of advanced degradation. Analyze of the identifiable figures allows however the identification of some scenes, which prove, in our opinion, a real preference of the donor and carver for the moralizing subjects. Among these degraded scenes, one is clearly identifiable and its subject is the illustration of the theme The Struggle of Faith with Idolatry, inspired by the work Psychomachia, written by the philosopher Prudentius around the year 400.
