Summary/Abstract: This article aims to present the dangers faced by missionaries from the Bohemian Province of theSociety of Jesus during their missionary expeditions to the New World in the 17th and 18th cen-turies. The primary source for this study is the correspondence of the Jesuits. The missionariesreported in their letters on the difficulty of their journey lasting many months and on the placeswhere they conducted their missionary work. In addition to interesting details of everyday lifeand passages describing the specific character of foreign regions, the correspondence also containsrecords of unexpected and dangerous events. The style of the letters indicates that their authorswere masters of language, familiar with the principles of epistolography and rhetoric. This articleexamines both the types of danger experienced by the missionaries and the ways in which theydepicted situations, circumstances, and states of peril in their correspondence.
