Summary/Abstract: As recently as the 20th century, coal mining dominated the economy of Svalbard. Currently, thereis a rapid increase in tourism activities based on the natural environment, wildlife, and glaciers. This developing sector became a significant part of the economy, and ensuring its sustainabilitybecame a priority. Moreover, the global network of the internet creates new possibilities, becominga communication channel that influences the recipient. The increase in tourism offers and accessto information creates a dilemma regarding how the industry should balance provided serviceswith the protection of the archipelago. To achieve this goal, a review of regulations was conducted, and original research was carried out in 2022 (n = 366), which revealed inconsistencies in tourismmanagement in Svalbard. Activities such as coal mining and cruise ship voyages disrupt the balancebetween economic development and the state of the natural environment.
