Summary/Abstract: Creation and application of universal norms, standards and models for better life and mental health may result in people becoming uniform, manipulated and even exploited. Humanistic psychology and existential psychotherapy acknowledge the uniqueness of subjective reality and the right of the person to create and defend his/hers personal conception of well-being and prosperity. Here, we argue that the psychoanalytical homeostasis principle is inadequate for above-biological levels of human function. In the existential paradigm, these levels are considered to be most-essential for the human nature. They determine the character and the vector of the everyday well-being; the power and the magnitude of the ability to cope with extraordinary and tragic events in life.
