Summary/Abstract: This paper reports the results of a research on the social psychological study of European identity, particularly the articulation of regional, national and supranational identities. Much research in this area is based on Tajfel's and Turner's theory on social categorisation and identity. However, their model does not sufficiently account for the plurality of patterns of relationships between such identities. Hence, we propose a more complete approach combining the study of different ideological conceptions of the European Union as well as the study of different relationships of international interdependency as envisaged by respondents. In this explanatory framework, we consider that an important role should be given to classical theories in social psychology such as those of Sherif on superordinate goals and of Rabbie on common fate.
