System and metasystem: From social psychology to political psychology

Summary/Abstract: In order to explain the ways psychoanalysis was understood by the French public in the 1950s and thereafter in the beginning of the 1970s Moscovici (1961, 1976) presented a theoretical model involving normative metasystems orienting and selecting the operations of cognitive systems. In a first part of this contribution his model will be presented and illustrated, and in a second part its extension will be proposed in order to account for specific attitudes in the realm of political and societal issues presently debated in Switzerland, France and Belgium.
