EARLY MIDDLE AGES IN DOBROGEA. DATA REGARDING TWO SETTLEMENTS FROM VALU LUI TRAIAN

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author directs her attention to two settlements formed around the castellum IV Schuchhardt/XXII Tocilescu and VII Schuchhardt/XX Tocilescu of the stone vallum, located on the territory of the commune of Valu lui Traian, which is located west of the municipality of Constanța. For the first, some special results of the preventive archaeological research carried out in 2010-2011 are presented, such as: an important context for the moment of the construction of the eastern wall of the western precinct of the castellum; two adjacent structures showing, in general, the characteristics of domestic architecture and inventory specific to the early medieval period, but which is characterized one by what may be an approximately semicircular niche on its eastern side, and the other by the presence of chalk blocks with incised marks (some cruciform) intercalated among the stones of the walls; respectively, four structures inside which were kept elements that can be attributed to mechanical grain grinding devices. For the second, identification is made in the field, starting from the records made at the beginning of the 20th century by the German archaeologist Carl Schuchhardt, corroborated with the data provided by Grigore Gr. Dănescu, with the information obtained following a survey made in the years `70 of the last century and with satellite images.
