Summary/Abstract: The fairy tale The Ugly Duckling by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen contains different interpretations, but one thing is for sure – one should not give up on one’s dreams. Two Bulgarian composers wrote musicals based on this plot – Jules Levi (I Want to Fly) and Mario Baltadjiev (The Ugly Duckling). The two musicals got their first realization on the drama stage – I want to fly at the Satirical Variety Theater in Gabrovo, and The Ugly Duckling – at the Teatro in Sofia. But both opuses have one production on the stage of the Musical Theater in Sofia. They will be analyzed in this text, making references to other stage works – the ballet Swan Lake, the opera Rigoletto and the tale of Vasilisa the Beautiful by Jules Levy; the fairy tale Mother’s Tear by Angel Karaliychev – with Baltadzhiev.
