Summary/Abstract: This article expounds a series of observations and considerations on traditional music in the contemporary Albanian village life, assembled during fieldwork for the project Ethnographic Atlas of the Village in Today Albania (2020-2022). After a brief exposition of the practice conducted in fieldwork, with a quantitative account of the collected data, I proceed with some methodological considerations concerning the limitations that the pandemic situation, during which the project took place, created on fieldwork and on music traditions, but also other reflections beyond that. Next, I present the main findings and observations in accordance with the research lines followed during the expeditions, especially in relation to the legacy of the socialist cultural system and the developments of the “transition” period to the present. In conclusion, I discuss the role of the “authentic” or the “popular” in the context of today’s music practice, deeply affected as it is by the processes of migration and emigration as well as by the great technological developments that permeate its economy.
