Summary/Abstract: The discipline of musicology in Albania has been established in the second half of the twentieth century. This article analyzes the work and contributions of its founder, Albert Paparisto, focusing on his organizational and pedagogical work as well as on his writings. First, I present an outline of the discipline, and afterwards, an analysis of the institutional structure in which it was conducted. The considerations on his writings refer constantly to the totalitarian context and the principles of socialist realism. Despite the inevitable limitations, Albert Paparisto’s writings retain a critical gist which frequently leads to evaluations that do not converge with the official ideological premises. Hence, they constitute a valuable starting point for more extensive research in this respect.
