LA MÉTAPHORE FILÉE DANS LE DISCOURS SPÉCIALISÉ EN FRANÇAIS. DE LA DÉNOMINATION SCIENTIFIQUE À LA VULGARISATION
EXTENDED METAPHOR IN FRENCH SPECIALISED DISCOURSE: FROM SCIENTIFIC DENOMINATION TO POPULARISATION

Summary/Abstract: Metaphor is an extremely varied phenomenon, which was studied not only in the context of poetry and rhetoric, but also in the field of terminology. Besides ornamental metaphors used in poetry and fiction, the language abounds in lexicalised metaphors with denominative function. Terminologists have long recognised their role as a source of terms. Similarly, extended metaphor is commonly found in specialised language, both on the lexical level, and the textual level, fulfilling several functions. This article offers some examples of extended metaphors used for denomination purposes in specialised terminologies of some fields (linguistics, computer science, genetics, and economics), as catachreses accepted by scholarly communities and legitimised by their terminological use. In addition, the article contains examples of their use in popular science texts, where they have explicative function, serving to bring an unknown field of speciality closer to a better-known field and make the specialised text intelligible to its addressee.
