Summary/Abstract: The text investigates the transformation of the Bulgarian nationalist identity within the reference framework of the pre-accession process. Three typical case studies in writings on national history have been analyzed: „history-encyclopaedia“, „history-manual“, „history-ideology“. We will try to prove that there is a process of (re) construction of the Bulgarian national identity in the way it incorporates the „European“ dimension as one of its primordial characteristics; this incorporation introduces a conceptual conflict. It takes the traditional connotations of the symbolical centre and transposes them onto its own space and past. As a result, strong nationalist tendencies are observed in all the texts.
