Summary/Abstract: The article looks into the causes for the self-perpetuation of existing disciplinary boundaries and the persistence of disciplinary cultures which are bound up with questions of epistemological allegiance, social validation and identity. The various pressures towards interdisciplinarity originating both from inside and outside discrete disciplines are examined, stressing the ways these have modified the character of knowledge produced. The author concludes with an argument in favour of the complementarity of mono-disciplinarity and interdsiciplinarity and of cross-disciplinary scientific communities as alternative structures for the production of knowledge.
