Labour Migration Impact on Living Conditions of Left Behind Bulgarian Muslim Families

Summary/Abstract: The current text would be examining the peculiarities of labour mobility amongst Bulgarian Muslims, inhabiting different parts of the country- namely, villages in the areas of Blagoevgrad, Lovech, Razgrad and Targovishte. In the afore-mentioned settlements, there can be observed different migration models and attitudes, which in turn affect family strategies for ensuring means of livelihood. The article draws attention to the active interaction and mutual assistance between migrants and their relatives, who remained behind in Bulgaria. The analysis of the field-based material allows for tracking the consequences upon the local community, the relationships between the families, as well as to trace the attitudes towards education among the adolescents. The study has been conducted in the spectrum of project: ‘Still in Bulgaria. Cultural and Social Effects of Labour Mobility and Migration on Bulgarian Society (1990-2019)’. The field study has been conducted throughout the period 2020-2023.
