Summary/Abstract: This paper offers a detailed analysis of gender-marked articles in German and Swedish and their usage in these Germanic languages. A comparative study demonstrates that in singular, these elements distinctly mark grammatical gender and definiteness of nouns. However, in plural forms, they serve more as gender-neutral markers, indicating only definiteness rather than grammatical gender. The article argues that, in German, these elements also indicate the natural gender of living beings, which justifies defining them as gender-marked articles rather than simple articles. This claim is supported by an extensive lexical analysis of terms referring to various social groups and personal names.
