Summary/Abstract: The article explores the significance of the film "Grey Bees," directed by Dmytro Moiseiev, which won the drama category at the XV Odesa International Film Festival. Based on the first part of Andriy Kurkov's novel, the film portrays the life of villagers in the "grey zone" of combat, focusing on the characters Serhii and Pashka. Living in a frontline area, Serhii tends to his bees and distributes honey to his neighbors, while grappling with personal fears and uncertainties. The narrative takes a turn with the appearance of a Ukrainian soldier's body, leading Serhii to encounter a living soldier who warns of an imminent Russian invasion. Despite the warnings, Serhii remains steadfastly attached to his land and home. The film emphasizes the rootedness of its characters and the metaphor of bees collecting honey, illustrating the chaotic coexistence of the villagers. "Grey Bees" resonates as a quintessential piece of Ukrainian cinema, reflecting themes of isolation, resilience, and the human condition amid conflict.
