Summary/Abstract: Population censuses represent the most important source of data for analyzing ethnic structures of population. Three basic ethnic traits are analyzed in the paper (national affiliation, mother language and religious affiliation) which were included in all post-war censuses (1948-2002) and which facilitate the perception of population dynamics of numerous ethnic communities. It is important to know that ethnic processes are influenced by changes of national affiliation – subjective factor, which is very important with all, especially some nationalities (Roma, Vlachs, Yugoslavs and others) apart from just demographic factors (natural increase and migrations). Furthermore, a proper analysis and comparison of ethnodemographic data requires knowledge of census methodology (applied solutions, criterions, definitions, classifications, etc.) which is of key influence on demographic trends of certain nationalities (e.g. Muslim, Bosnians, Yugoslavs and others) and changes of ethnic structure of population.
