Archives and ethics: Why do we need it now more than ever?

Summary/Abstract: Ethics and morals, that consider as ethical and moral relation to things and people only, what is best for things and people, interfere with archival Code of Ethics necessarily in the phase of the creation of archives as a cultural monument. This means that we need to behave ethically and morally toward the records and archives already at this stage of the formation of archives. In the ten general ethical principles which, together with an explanation form the core of the Code of Ethics for the archives, we find the definitions of the fundamental principles of archival professional work and records management. As the basic principles of archival professional work provenance, the original order, the integrity of the fonds and appraisal are contained in the first and second paragraphs of the Code. Presented are also the principles of conduct of employees in the archives toward users of archival services, outlined are the principles of mutual relations between the employees and the ways in which archives can provide the best possible visibility and reputation in the society. Principles in the Code promote also the continuing professional education in the archives and indicate the necessity of close professional contacts between archivists in the country and abroad. The remaining articles of the Code contain the principles concerning conservation and restoration, use of archives for research purposes, the personal liability of users of the information obtained from the archives and their interpretation, personal integrity of user’s as well as administrative and legal needs. In the individual principles one can also find instructions to prevent personal enrichment through the abuse of archival service, to regulate the mutual relations between employees in the archives and to create positive public attitudes to the archival profession through the archives and archival manifestations.
