Summary/Abstract: There is no word in jazz terminology that is more ambiguous than the word “improvisation”. “Making it up” fails to describe this complex process. The translation of the word (from Italian: improvisazione, from Latin: improvisus - unexpected, unforeseen, sudden) implies performing an action (for example, creating music) in the moment, as an expression of momentary sensations. In musical improvisation there is no division of the function of the composer, who composes music, and the performer, who interprets the created music.
