Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the role of the first pedagogical journal in the Romanian language, Amicul Școlii (The Friend of the School), which appeared in Sibiu between 1860 and 1865, at a time when the primary school system in the Austrian Empire (and thus also in Transylvania) was confessionally shaped and under the care of different denominations. The situation of the Romanian education system was particularly precarious because the Orthodox Church did not have the status of a recognized denomination until the 1848 revolution, so the existing Orthodox confessional schools in the Romanian villages received no support from the state authorities. The editors of the journal Amicul Școlii tried to increase the interest of the local and church authorities in the schools, and they succeeded in organizing the first teachers’ conferences in the Orthodox Diocese of Transylvania.
