Summary/Abstract: The general secretary of the administrative-territorial unit represents an important pawn in the local public administration in Romania, being one of the public functions with tradition in our country. Although its name has been changed over time, its special role has been maintained, especially regarding the observance of the principle of legality at the level of each administrative-territorial unit. In accordance with the legal provisions, the general secretary of the administrative-territorial unit has the capacity of leading civil servant and is included in the specialized apparatus of the mayor, respectively of the county council. Within the Romanian public administration structure, the role of the general secretary of the administrative-territorial unit is an extremely important one. This paper aims to show what are the main duties of the general secretary of the administrative-territorial unit, referring to the reports, respectively to the close connection with other authorities of the local public administration, be they executive or deliberative, but also with the representative of the Government in the territory.
