Summary/Abstract: Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the developed countries. Since Chiari described the importance of carotid atherosclerosis as a cause of stroke, knowledge regarding its importance in the pathogenesis of stroke and its treatment has advanced dramatically. Understanding the anatomy, pathophysiology and treatment of carotid pathology continues to grow rapidly. Extracranial arteries diseases and their surgical treatment worldwide are among the most studied intervention in vascular surgery. Diagnostic methods provide a more clear presentation of the appearance, composition and hemodynamic changes in the carotid arteries.
