Summary/Abstract: The article examines the substitutability of certain elements of the global semiconductor value chain from the perspective of innovation. Based on theoretical cor-relations, it can be concluded that the most important and difficult-to-substitute elements of the value chain are those where radical innovations occur. Following this, the article investigates the innovation capabilities of the semiconductor industry in four countries: the United States, Korea, Taiwan, and China. Based on the case studies, it concludes that the most important and difficult-to-substitute element of the global value chain is the United States.
