Summary/Abstract: At the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, Bulgaria faced a number of social and demographic challenges that strongly affected the rural areas of the country. The transition to a market economy after the changes in 1989 led to significant changes in the structure of the rural population, economic activity and living standards. Demographic processes such as population aging, high migration to cities and abroad, as well as declining birth rates, exacerbate social problems in these regions. At the same time, rural areas face limited access to quality services in health, education and social infrastructure. These challenges call into question the sustainable development of rural areas and their ability to adapt to modern conditions.
