Summary/Abstract: Charles de Gaulle’s political speeches display references to France, the French people, the nation, the (French) Republic. We suggest a line of inquiry concerning de Gaulle’s political speeches pronounced from London during the war and from France after the war. We are interested in correctly identifying the notional content lying behind such terms and their rhetorical and argumentative potential. Especially after the war, the contents of the notion La République is endowed with new meanings to make it appeal more strongly to the emotions of the French people.
