Summary/Abstract: The article sets off to explore the act of naming in the context of the early modern discovery, explorations and colonisation of the New World, analysing the cultural significance of place naming against the backdrop of the travel reports produced by Christopher Columbus, Thomas Harriot and Captain John Smith in the attempt to reveal the changes undergone by the ideology of toponymy. The discussion draws on the notions of cultural translation, mimesis, invisibility and the political unconscious as defined by cultural historians such as Peter Burke, John Brian Harley and new historicists such as Stephen Greenblatt.
