Summary/Abstract: The article sets off to explore Francis Bacon’s millenarian project of advancing learning. The reformation of knowledge is envisaged by Bacon as a new stage in the progress of man, as a time when, by gaining a deeper knowledge of the world, man is restored to a state of control over the rest of creation. Bacon’s project is often formulated in spatial metaphors since the time for the renewed dominion of man over nature is inaugurated by his conquest of space in an age of discovery and exploration.
