Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to reveal the problems of the most recent boom of building activity at the turn of the millennium in Hungary in context of urban academic archaeological survey and cultural heritage management. The problems will be examined through three towns in the eleventh – sixteenth-century period in central Hungary: Esztergom, Visegrád and Vác. They all are situated on the bank of the Danube River. The origins of their urban history based on the early decades of the foundation of the Hungarian state in the eleventh century. The last reason of their choice is the frequent large-scale archaeological surveys of the last decades. The recent surveys produced results on 1. the early, pre-urban period of the settlements; 2. the relationship between the environmental changes and the architectural activity; 3. the archaeological topography, buildings and street structure. The increased numbers of the urban archaeological finds have an impact on the different interpretation of restoring historical buildings and town planning. One of the frequent questions is the degree of the necessity of excavations, another is the rate of authenticity in the process of restoring. The interaction of the tasks of the academic research and the cultural heritage is much more important today due to the large amount of new archaeological evidences and the new building technology, even if the relating questions are still disputed.
