Victims of human trafficking

Summary/Abstract: An underground phenomenon of global dimensions, responsible for causing million of human dramas, the human trafficking recorded a constant increase, becoming both a national as well as international problem. The human trafficking phenomenon expanded throughout Southeast Europe, turning Romania into a transit ground but also a starting point for the big trafficking networks. Considered the third most profitable affair after drug and weapon trafficking, the human trafficking started to be banned by legislative systems starting with 2000 due to Palermo Protocol regarding the prevention, fighting and sanctioning of human trafficking, especially of women and children, an additional act to UN Convention on fighting across boundary criminality. In Romania, the prevention and fighting against human trafficking is regulated, mainly, through Law no. 678/2001. Even if the forms of exploitation differ (ranging from commercial sex to work exploitation), the purpose is the same: gaining a profit by selling and exploiting a human being, while breaching apparently the most basic human rights.
